FEATURED BOOK :
When Jesus Became God: The Struggle to Define Christianity during the Last Days of Rome by Richard E. Rubenstein
This book is a MUST READ by honest Trinitarians and non-Trinitarians alike.
Background note : When the creator of this website was Eastern/Byzantine Catholic (known as the self proclaimed and crowned Eastern “Orthodox”) for almost 8 years, my family was fed a neatly designed packaged claiming that all heresy in regard to “The Trinity” and the dispute whether “Jesus was God” was taken care of by the ENTIRE united church (Kum ba yah) in 325 AD at the Council of Nicea.
That is a complete falsehood. The doctrine of “The Trinity” is an innovation of the 4th century and after.
As new converts to “Orthodoxy” we were never told that in reality there were actually only a handful of western Catholics who were not even present at Nicea in 325, and therefore technically the Council of Nicea in 325 was NOT an “ecumenical council,” but we will put that detail aside for now.
Historical reality is different from the package we were given. Richard Rubenstein shows definitively, in my opinion, that it would actually take almost another 70 years battle between Christians before the finalization of the Creed at the First Council of Constantinople in 381.
What does this reveal? It does not determine if “The Trinity” is true or not, but it does show that if the doctrine of “The Trinity” was already held to by the masses and was “the” Christian teaching about God and His son of the first 3 centuries, there would have been no battle.
BUT again, “Orthodoxy is whatever the winners get to say it is” and after 381 the doctrine of “The Trinity” was pretty well established as “Orthodoxy” without which, it was declared, you can not be saved.
